Tool Safety

Purpose: reduce injuries by using clear pre-checks, body mechanics, and stop rules for hand and power tools.

Do This First

  1. Inspect tool condition before use: handles, guards, cords, blades.
  2. Wear required PPE for task type.
  3. Secure workpiece before cutting, drilling, or striking.
  4. Define your cut/force direction away from body line.

Common Mistakes and Fixes

Scenario Drills

Drill 1: Pre-Use Safety Sweep

  1. Lay out 8 tools with 4 hidden defects.
  2. Run inspection checklist.
  3. Flag unsafe tools and explain reasons.
  4. Goal: detect 100% of seeded defects.

Drill 2: Controlled Cut Workflow

  1. Set up repeated cut task with clamps and guide.
  2. Run cut sequence slowly with stop points.
  3. Record errors in stance, grip, and setup.
  4. Goal: zero body-line violations in 10 repetitions.

Safety note: if you feel rushed, stop. Most tool injuries happen when speed replaces control.
