Backup Strategy

Purpose: make sure your critical data survives device failure, ransomware, theft, and power outages.

Do This First (Today)

  1. Identify critical folders: IDs, finance, medical, contacts, project files.
  2. Create two local backup copies on separate drives.
  3. Create one off-site or disconnected copy.
  4. Run a restore test on one file before calling it done.

Tools and Materials

Use the 3-2-1 Rule

For ransomware resistance, keep one backup physically disconnected except during backup windows.

Common Mistakes and Fixes

Scenario Drills

Drill 1: Drive Failure Recovery

  1. Pretend primary drive is dead.
  2. Restore 10 critical files to a spare folder.
  3. Measure recovery time.
  4. Goal: recover essentials in under 30 minutes.

Drill 2: Ransomware Weekend

  1. Simulate lockout of workstation.
  2. Execute isolate → wipe → restore flow.
  3. Verify last clean backup date and data loss window.
  4. Goal: full recovery under 2 hours, data loss under 24 hours.

Safety note: if a device looks infected, do not connect backup drives. Isolate first, investigate second.
