Barter Pricing
Purpose: price goods and labor fairly when cash is unstable, scarce, or not accepted.
Quick Start (10 Minutes)
- Pick one base unit for your market. Suggested: 1 labor hour or 1 meal equivalent.
- List your top 12 tradable items with unit size and condition grade.
- Set reserve floor you never trade below. Example: 7 day food and water minimum.
- Use a pricing card so every trader in your group uses the same units.
Tools and Materials
- Notebook or printed ledger cards
- Kitchen scale and measuring cup
- Condition labels A/B/C/D
- Permanent marker and tamper tape
- Pocket calculator
- Simple price board updated weekly
Core Pricing Formula
Barter Price = Base Value × Scarcity Multiplier × Risk Multiplier × Urgency Multiplier
- Base Value: normal local trade value in calm conditions
- Scarcity: 1.0 normal, 1.25 tight, 1.5 scarce, 2.0 critical
- Risk: 1.0 low risk, 1.2 medium, 1.4 high handling risk
- Urgency: 1.0 routine, 1.15 same day, 1.3 immediate
Keep multipliers public. Hidden multipliers kill trust.
Reference Value Table
| Item | Standard Unit | Base Value (labor hours) | Notes |
| AA batteries | 4 pack | 0.5 | Sealed only |
| Potable water | 1 gallon | 0.4 | Container included |
| White rice | 1 lb | 0.45 | Dry, pest free |
| Gasoline | 1 gallon | 1.2 | Clean can and label |
| Basic wound care kit | 1 set | 1.5 | Non-expired components |
| Repair labor | 1 hour | 1.0 | Simple baseline unit |
Tune values to local reality every 7 days or after major disruption.
Decision Table for Disputes
| If this happens | Do this now | Backup action | Verify |
| Quality challenged | Re-grade item in front of both parties | Reduce quantity by 10 percent | Both sign updated terms |
| No agreement on value | Convert both offers to labor-hour units | Add neutral mediator | Difference under 15 percent |
| Price spike rumor | Use posted board, not rumors | Temporary freeze 24 hours | Board updated with source |
| Urgent medical case | Apply emergency pricing cap | Community relief pool | Case logged for review |
